Filtration

1.Filtration involves the establishment of a stable interface between the drain and the surrounding soil. In all soils water flow will induce the movement of fine particles. Initially a portion of this fraction will be halted at the filter interface; some will be halted within the filter itself while the rest will pass into the drain. The geotextile provides an ideal interface for the creation of a reverse filter in the soil adjacent to the geotextile. The complex needle-punched structure of the geotextile provides for the retention of fine particles without reducing the permeability requirement of the drain.

2. Northlink Supply

The equilibrium soil-to-geotextile system that allows for adequate movement of a liquid across the plane of the geotextile with limited soil loss over the service lifetime of the application.

3. GEOCHEM ENGINEERING S.A

The filtration function is defined as “The restraining of soil or other particles subjected to hydrodynamic forces while allowing the passage of fluids into or across a geotextile’’. Efficient geotextile filters must have pores of different shape, size and size distribution similar to the particle size distribution of soil.

Benefits:

• Prevents the migration of fine material into coarse material as a result of water flow in the soil

• Maintains the water flow in the soil with a minimum of pressure loss

• Prevents the migration of fine material as a result of pump effects from dynamic loads such as traffic

Drainage

Northlink Supply

The equilibrium soil-to-geotextile system that allows for adequate movement of a liquid in the plane of the geotextile over the service lifetime of the application.

TENCATE Mirafi

High permittivity properties provide high water flow rates while providing excellent soil retention.

TENCATE

Aggregate trench and blanket drains are commonly used to drain water from surrounding soils or waste materials. These drains are typically installed less than three feet deep. They may be at greater depths in situations where there is a need to significantly lower the groundwater table or to drain leachate. In loose or gap graded soils, the groundwater flow can carry soil particles toward the drain. These migrating particles can clog drainage systems.

 TENCATE

Geotextile filters retain soil particles while allowing seeping water to drain freely. Fine soil particles are prevented from clogging drainage systems.

Reinforcement

GEOCHEM ENGINEERING S.A

The reinforcement function is defined as “The use of the stress-strain behaviour of a geotextile or a geotextile-related product to improve the mechanical properties of soil or other construction materials”.

Benefits:

• A cost effective and safe solution for the reinforcement of retaining structures and embankments on soft soils

• Improves soil stabilization and bearing capacity

Northlink Supply

The synergistic improvement of a total system’s strength created by the introduction of a reinforcing geosynthetic (that is good in tension) into a soil and/or aggregate system (that is good in compression but poor in tension).

Separation

Northlink Supply

The placement of a flexible, porous geotextile between dissimilar materials so that the integrity and intended functions of both materials remain intact or are improved.

GEOCHEM ENGINEERING S.A

Separation function is defined as: “The preventing from intermixing of
adjacent dissimilar soils and/or fill materials by the use of a geotextile or a geotextile-related product”. The use of the geotextile preserves and improves the integrity and function of the different materials.
Benefits:

• Prevents mixing of the construction layers

• Improves the compaction properties of the aggregate layer

• Provides long-term stability of foundation layers

• Increases bearing capacity by avoiding aggregate material loss into the subgrade

Protection

Erosion of earth embankments by wave action, currents and repeated drawdown is a constant problem requiring the use of non-erodable protection in the form of rock beaching or mattress structures. Beneath these is placed a layer of geotextile to prevent leaching of fine material. The geotextile is easily placed, even under water.

TENCATE

Stone and concrete revetments are often used on waterway slopes to resist soil erosion. These armored systems, when placed directly on the soil, have not sufficiently prevented erosion. Fluctuating water levels cause seepage in and out of embankment slopes resulting in the displacement of fine soil particles. As with trench drains, these fine soil particles are carried away with receding flows. This action eventually leads to undermining of the armor system.

TENCATE

Geotextile filters retain soil particles while allowing water to pass freely. Buildup of hydrostatic pressures in protected slopes is prevented, thus enhancing slope stability.

4.GEOCHEM ENGINEERING S.A

The protection function is defined as “The prevention or limiting of local damage to a given element or material by the use of a geotextile”.

Benefits:

• Gives high, durable protection to the waterproofing liner

• Fast and Easy installation compared to soil layers
